Not all water damage is treated the same way, and it isn't just about volume. Restoration professionals classify water into three categories based on contamination level. That classification drives real decisions about safety equipment, containment, and whether materials can be cleaned or need to be removed entirely.

Category 1: Clean Water

Clean water comes from a sanitary source: a supply line, a broken water heater, or rainwater that hasn't picked up contaminants. It poses the lowest risk, and materials affected by clean water have the best odds of being fully salvaged if extraction and drying happen quickly. That said, clean water doesn't stay clean forever. If left standing for more than a couple of days, it can start absorbing contaminants from the materials around it and effectively degrade toward Category 2.

Category 2: Gray Water

Gray water contains a noticeable level of contamination: think water from a washing machine, dishwasher, or a toilet overflow involving only urine, not solid waste.
